History of Musiqa's Education Programs
Musiqa's first educational program was presented at the Hobby Center in 2004, shortly after the hall opened. Titled "A Musical Spring," it featured soprano Karol Bennett and pianist Rod Waters in an interactive performance. Thanks to corporate underwriting, the program was presented to 2,000 public elementary school students at no cost.
In a meeting afterwards, the corporate representatives asked HISD's Janice Crawford how many more students could have been served. She answered that she could have easily invited twice as many. In response, funding was doubled, and 4,000 students were invited the following year. This support gave Musiqa's composers the opportunity to create "Around the World with Musiqa," its four-time NEA award winning program that includes in-school workshops and a larger ensemble led by Ms. Bennett performing folk song settings by modern masters and Musiqa's Artistic Board.
In 2010, Musiqa added a second school program, "Musiqa ReMix," presented in collaboration with the Alley Theater, with original music by Musiqa's composers.
