"Musiqa ReMix" Educational Program

Musiqa is excited to announce that we have received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help us create a new educational program.  We are fundraising to help meet the $10,000 matching funds required by the government grant.  Musiqa’s current educational outreach program, Around the World with Musiqa, is one of the largest and most successful programs ever created by an American contemporary music ensemble: It has been performed before more than 20,000 public elementary school students in the past six years and earned two awards from the National Endowment for the Arts.  The great majority of the students who attend are from underserved schools; this is their first experience of live concert music in a downtown theater.  The students also receive in-school workshops, transportation and a DVD—all at little or no cost to participating schools. This project will recreate this success for middle and high school students. We have raised $13,000 for the $20,000 project.

Stewart Wallace Opera Commission

Musiqa is commissioning a new work by composer Stewart Wallace to be premiered by Musiqa on October 16, 2010 at the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall.  Stewart grew up in Houston and has gone onto establish an international career. His opera Harvey Milk, commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera and San Francisco Opera and premiered here in Houston, is widely celebrated as a modern classic; it has been performed all over the world.   Stewart’s opera The Bonesetter’s Daughter, with a libretto by Amy Tan based on her novel, premiered last year to sold out houses at the San Francisco Opera.  The New York Times called it a “work of total theater.”  The San Francisco Chronicle said that the opera “explodes onto the stage…and the resultant air of excitement never really subsides… a new opera in which musical characterization, dramatic clarity and theatrical vigor combine to form an arresting and vividly memorable experience.”  For his Musiqa commission, Stewart is planning to develop themes from the Bonesetter’s Daughter into a half-hour chamber arrangement for voice and ensemble.   This will be Houston’s first opportunity to hear music from Stewart’s recent triumph.  It will also enable Stewart to create a reduced version of the opera score that can travel easily and be performed in chamber settings.  His residency in Houston will include community events and Stewart will introduce his premiere at our concert.  Our goal is to raise $25,000 to fund the commission. We have raised $10,000 so far.
