roy_timothy_headshot-jpgTimothy Roy, a DMA candidate at Rice University Shepherd School of Music, has been selected by the Artistic Board as Musiqa’s Composer+Intern for the 2016-17 season.

“We’re delighted to welcome Tim as our third Composer+Intern,” said Anthony Brandt, Artistic Director of Musiqa. “Tim is a very gifted composer of both instrumental and electronic music, and we look forward to working with him and presenting his music!”

A native of Nederland Texas, Roy composes music steeped in imagery and allusion, which often seeks to conjure a sense of time, place, and feeling.

“I am thrilled and honored to have been selected as the Composer+Intern,” stated Roy. “Musiqa’s mission to bring contemporary music to Houston audiences is one I believe in wholeheartedly. I look forward to assisting the organization this year and am excited to have my music featured during the season!”

Roy’s work has been presented nationally and internationally, with performances at the Music Biennale Zagreb, Bowling Green New Music Festival, International Computer Music Conference, Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium, Center of Cypriot Composers, Society for Electro-ˇAcoustic Music in the United States National Conference, and the International Electroacoustic Music Festival of Chile, “Ai-ˇmaako.”

Roy has received honors from several competitions, including the first prize at the International Competition of Electroacoustic Composition “Prix Destellos”, the Musicacoustica-ˇBeijing Composition Competition, and the Sigma Alpha Iota Inter-American Music Awards, as well as finalist at the First International Jean Sibelius Composition Competition and the International Composition Competition “Città di Udine”.

Timothy holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from Southern Methodist University, where he was both a President’s Scholar and Theodore Presser Scholar, and a master’s degree in composition from the University of Missouri-ˇKansas City. He is currently a doctoral student at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he serves as the Teaching Fellow for the Rice Electroacoustic Music Labs. Timothy’s primary teachers have been Pierre Jalbert, Kurt Stallmann, James Mobberley, Chen Yi, Paul Rudy, Kevin Hanlon, and Martin Sweidel.
