What’s special about this program

  • The season-opening concert introduces the audience to contemporary music by composers with global inspirations and eclectic influences.

  • The performance concludes with percussionist/composer Tsoof Baras’ “The Angels are Coming,” a fun, heavenly piece for 6 harmonic whirlies, and if you stick around afterward, you can try your hand at playing them!

  • Join us at 5:00pm for family-friendly activities including face-painting and an instrument petting zoo.

The Program

Tsoof Baras: "The Angels are Coming"
This “chorale” for six harmonic whirlies is heavenly and playful.
Evan Chambers: "Love Dogs"
East meets west in this string trio—violin, viola, and cello—a mash-up of Sufi Qawwali music from South Asia and Louisiana bluegrass.
Aftab Darvishi: "Nesyan"
This hauntingly beautiful piece for clarinet and string quartet transcends cultures of her native Iran and the Netherlands where she trained.
Ying Chen Kao: “530.623”
James MacMillan: “Memento”

A brief movement for string quartet, Memento is slow, delicate and tentative and is based on the modality of Gaelic lament music and the Gaelic heterophony of psalmsinging in the Hebrides.

Jessie Montgomery: "Strum”
This folk- and dance-inspired piece for string quartet creates feelings of nostalgia and celebration, while weaving rhythmic and harmonic textures.
Karalyn Schubring: "Blossom”
This piece is inspired by the courageous blossoms of Michigan that press against the ground and gravity with such patience and endurance. It begins with a freely flowing song that gradually develops into a more complex, joy-bringing organism.
